Destruction of Graviton City
The Japanese have an obsession with destruction on a massive scale, and this is reflected in Project A-ko in many different ways. The most dramatic, and earliest in the movie is the destruction of Graviton City by the "asteroid" is a perfect example. This kind of destruction is a recurring theme in anime in movies such as Akira, Aika, Ghost in the Shell (floods), Bubblegum Crisis (earthquake), and many others. Also don't forget the ever popular "Monster-That-That-Ate-Tokyo" movies as well.
This fascination possibly has links to the massive destruction Japan was subjected to in WWII.
